Job description

The Institute of Mine Seismology (IMS) is looking for a motivated individual with a passion for electronics, software, technology and innovation to strengthen its engineering team. The position is based in Hobart on the beautiful island state of Tasmania.

About the position

You would work as part of a small team developing, supporting and maintaining IMS’s seismic monitoring ecosystem (sensors, acquisition, telemetry, storage and processing). In this role, you will help architect, design and develop the hardware and software underpinning IMS’s digital data acquisition and monitoring system. Depending on your skills and interests the role could be adapted
to be more focused on hardware, firmware or software development. You should however be able to move between these roles comfortably.

Hardware design will involve embedded systems, micro-controllers, IoT and sensors. Software development would focus on system/foundational level software (as opposed to application or graphical software). You should be comfortable using low-level C code for embedded systems and C/C++, Java and Python code running on server hardware.

The role will have a strong focus on testing and verification. We are looking for someone with keen attention to detail and a rigorous approach to quality and reliability. You need to be highly self-motivated and autonomous, able to effectively structure your own work, make realistic time estimates, and communicate well.


Minimum requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Engineering, Computer Science or similar (STEM)
  • Electronics design experience (minimum 2 years)
  • Proficient programming skills with experience in C, C/C++, Java, Python and Shell
  • Relevant programming experience (minimum 2 years)
  • Attention to detail with a focus on quality and reliability
  • Linux familiarity and experience
  • Computer hardware fundamentals and hands-on experience
  • Good time management skills and work ethic; self-motivated and autonomous
  • Motivation and willingness to work extra hours to meet deadlines
  • Fluency in spoken and written English and strong technical writing skills
  • Excellent communication skills
