IMS is advertising a permanent position for an Operations Geoscientist to join our Applied Geophysics team in Somerset West, South Africa.
About the Position
We are looking for a diligent candidate with an Earth Sciences background, who is eager to learn. The ideal candidate should be able to work well in a small team, be well organised, enthusiastic and flexible.
The advertised role encompasses a range of activities: the main responsibility is handling all logistics in relation to the activities of the Applied Geophysics Group. This includes managing IMS’ fleet of geophysical equipment, handling shipping logistics, array design, liaising with third party suppliers of equipment, data download and programming of devices, organising conferences and planning site visits for installation. Between acquisition campaigns, the successful candidate will assist the Business Development Manager in promoting and marketing mineral exploration geophysics services globally, and will occasionally travel nationally and internationally to visit customers and to present at conferences.
Minimum requirements for this role:
- Strong background in the Earth Sciences
- Computer literacy
- A passion for learning new skills
- The right to legally work in South Africa
Desirable additional attributes:
- Computer programming experience (especially in Python and/or Java with a focus on scientific applications)
- Knowledge about and experience in scientific data visualization (CAD, GIS)
- Experience with using Linux
- Good communication skills, including writing in English
No previous domain experience is required – IMS will supply in-house and on-the-job training, but an enthusiastic willingness to learn will be essential.
